Josh Akognon is a versatile guard who can play either the PG or SG and is one of the best shooters in the country. He possesses the quickness, athleticism, length, and high basketball IQ that makes him one of the best guards in the world and has shown that he can be a true floor general and at the same time lead his team in scoring. Josh has both USA and Nigerian passports. He has played for the Nigerian National Team. Josh is a high level basketball player and should land on an NBA roster in the near future. Josh has shined since graduating from college, playing in the Baltic League and top Chinese League (CBA). He was named to both the All-Baltic League Team and the All Chinese CBA Team. In his two seasons overseas he led his team in Estonia and China to the league Semi-Finals. In the 2011 CBA sesason Josh averaged 29ppg, 4rpg, 3apg, 2spg, FG 56%, 3FG 39%, FT 87%.

In his senior season in 2008-09 Josh was named Big West Player of the Year, All-Big West 1st Team, and All Big West All-Tournament Team. Josh was also awarded the NABC Division I All-District 9 First Team. Josh also played in the NCAA D1 All-Star Game. In his senior season Josh averaged 24ppg, 3rpg, 2apg, 1spg. Josh finished his two year career ranked seventh all-time at Cal State Fullerton with 1,411 career points. He also ranks second in three-pointers made (252) and second in scoring averaged (22.0ppg). Josh also participated in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament for the top seniors in the NCAA being considered for the 2009 NBA Draft.

Prior to coming to Fullerton Josh transferred away from a deliberate Washington State offensive scheme to join the up-tempo Titans. Josh averaged 10.3 points to lead the Cougars in scoring in 2005-06, playing in all 28 games and starting 13 times.

In the 2006 World Basketball Championships Josh averaged 11 minutes per game off the bench for Nigeria, which went 2-4 (beat Serbia & Montenegro and Lebanon; lost to Venezuela, France, Argentina and Germany) in Tokyo in August of 2006.

Josh went to Casa Grande HS. He was selected most valuable player of both the Sonoma County League and the Redwood Empire Section. As point guard he was named Northern California Div. II Player of the Year, first-team Div. II all-state selection, and led the Bay Area and ranked fifth in California in scoring with 30 points per game.


Born on Feb. 10, 1986, in Greenbrae, California. Josh’s parents are Emmanuel and Alfreda Akognon of Petaluma, has an older brother, (Shola) and a younger sister (Shonte). Josh received his Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management. Full name is Joshua Emmanuel Akognon. Josh is married to Ariana and has a son named Josiah. When Josh isn’t playing basketball he enjoys spending time with his family and helping out in the church. Josh’s favorite player is Allen Iverson.
